RPI 2. Agenda - Know your Learners as Readers

What a day of learning today! I was overwhelmed and felt a bit lost with what we did but I am trusting the process and know it will all come together. This morning, Dorothy stopped by to give us some insights into literacy cycles, but what really stood out for me was her talk about podcasts. What an amazing way to engage tamariki in reading and the many learning outcomes that followed.

We were given our teacher workbook, used to track all of our learning and work. This sheet is huge but I am looking forward to using it and keeping track of what’s happening. I was interested and amazed at the task boards concept and how they are used. I think they are a great tool to use for learning. I am excited to create and use these with tamariki. The table below has me thinking about my teaching, and how I am making assessment capable learners.

Thank you again for sharing your professional learning from another day with us on the Reading Practice Intensive. I totally agree that this day to do with assessment, can be really overwhelming. I am wondering if it would be worth us getting together online for a korero and review of some of the tools you will be encountering for the first time. Remember, we are returning to each of these topics in the coming days, so for now just focus on the literacy progressions part in the Teacher Workbook to support your Learning Intentions implementation. Whaea Lynda and I are talking about how we can language and better support the use of these resources for Kōhanga Reo.

I’ll email you to see if we can do a short catch up to talk about the homework and the teacher workbook going forward. It’s important to remember, you will pick up and use what you can for now, but there is no expectation to get your head around all of it at this stage.

All the very best for your coaching conversations and task board design. You may want to have a look at Whaea Lucy’s example from last year: https://lucysouthon.blogspot.com/2024/04/mahi-panui-kahuku.html
